[Derek Jarman] 'There was a whole social and other aspect of going out and meeting people in clubs, which a lot of people at the time thought were wrong, but were actually the bedrock of many people meeting, and collective activity.
If it hadn't been for gay clubs and things, it wouldn't have been possible to organise the response that's been organised to the Aids crisis.
It was necessary because they gave, for the first time, a feeling that there were more people.'
